Yet Another FMCA Motorhome Convention
Motor Home on the Range
October 2002

Trip Summary

This would be the fifth time we attended a motorhome convention held by the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA), our first in Kansas. This also was another journey that did not begin from our home in California. The trip begins in Wichita and ends in Hutchinson, a little over fifty miles away.

The location for Motor Home on the Range

I've said, about a couple of trips in the past, that if I had known ahead of time what was going to happen on this trip, I probably would not have made the trip. Unlike past trips, once I was there and things began to go wrong, I still didn't want to be there. We had to deal with torrential rain and mud — my gosh, did we ever have to deal with MUD. However, we did have a very unusual adventure and we came out of it in pretty good shape. Now we will no longer wonder what happens when a campground turns to mud.

As usual, the one thing that helped to make everything come out okay was the fact that we were in the company of friends.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who helped to extract our motorhomes out of the mud. I learned, after returning to our home base in California, that many of the tractors were provided — at no charge — by a dealer in Hutchinson. Many of the tractor drivers and their assistants were local volunteers who were trying to help visitors deal with an unpleasant situation. I especially want to thank the man who drove the lift truck used to pull our group's rigs out of the muck.

Kay or Maury took all photos that appear in this story unless otherwise noted.
