Saturday 9-19

We were up early once again so we could get on the road for the last day of our trip. It didn't take much to get ready because we only used the electric hookup. Our caravan of four motorhomes left the campground close to 8 o’clock. Since the campground is only 3 miles from I-5, it didn’t take long for us to get to the Interstate where we turned our rigs south to head for California. The border was only 19 miles away, so it didn't take long for us to cross over into our home state. A very short distance after entering California, we had to stop at an Agricultural Inspection Station.

I pulled our motorhome up behind Tom and Nora’s rig. In front of them was Harry and Shirley’s motorhome with Harry being quizzed by the agricultural inspector. Wally had entered first, so he and Cathie were already back on the road. As Harry pulled away from the inspector's booth, his motorhome blew a huge cloud of diesel smoke into the inspector's booth.

The inspector came running out to get behind his booth to try to use it as shield from the smelly fumes. Tom said the inspector wasn’t in a good mood when it was time for him to move up to the booth. As Tom drove away and we approached the booth, a new inspector came up to give the smoked inspector a break. The new guy was a bit abrasive and did not seem to enjoy his work.

Again we see Mt. Shasta ahead

As we drove south, Mt Shasta appeared ahead of us until it filled most of the view. I tried to take pictures of the mountain as I drove, but I wasn’t very successful. Thanks to Tom’s desire for lunch, we stopped at a roadside rest area for our midday meal. The rest area turned out to be a very nice with big shade trees. Since we had left the rain and unstable weather behind, we all decided to have lunch together on one of the picnic tables. Most of us had sandwiches for lunch except for Cathie who brought a crab out to eat. We had a nice break from our drive home, but it soon was time to get back behind the wheel of our motorhome and continue our trek.

Our caravan at the last stop of our trip

The scenes we saw on our way to Oregon presented themselves to us again as we drove down I-5. Again we saw the farm operation with the herd of Brahma cattle. We passed by the Campers Inn where we began our trip almost one week before. In a short time we were on the I-505 bypass to I-80 and on our way to Camping World on the west side of Fairfield. Harry and Wally had been leading our caravan out ahead of Tom and me by a good distance. They were ahead of us enough that they said their good-byes over the CB while we were on I-505. We continued on to I-80 and the Camping World exit. By the time we arrived at the exit, our motorhome was low on gas, so we stopped to refuel before going on to Camping World. By the time we got there, Tom had just finished dumping the holding tanks of his motorhome; so we pulled up to do the same.

With that done, we went into the store to see if there was anything in there that we couldn’t do without but didn’t know it before entering the store. To our surprise the rest of our group was in the store. There we found Harry and Shirley along with Wally and Cathie. We went in to buy toilet chemicals but came out with the usual bag of goodies. With our visit to Camping World concluded, it was time to head for Tom and Nora’s house to shed the boat we were towing behind our coach.

When we arrived at Tom and Nora’s place, I tried to back the boat down their long driveway. I didn't do very well. I couldn’t see the boat trailer in my side mirrors until it was too far off course. So we ended up just disconnecting the trailer from our motorhome and pushing it down the driveway. It was very easy to do it that way because the boat was so light. Now we could say our good-byes and be on our way home, truly the last leg of our trip. We pulled into our home driveway at about 5:30PM.
