Life in Camp — Part 2

The morning began with heavy fog with it clearing during the morning before noon. We had another very good time on the bay, this time with nice weather. Again we were back in camp fairly early which gave us all a chance to catch up on chores outside.

At one point, Nilo was up on the roof of Tom's motorhome with Tom directing Nilo as to how to adjust the CB antenna. Tom was trying to fine tune his CB antenna to get a little better performance from his transceiver. The result was a slightly better tuned antenna./p>

Returning to camp early also gave Nilo more time to prepare his culinary specialty, cioppino. As in the past, Nilo was assisted by others who helped with part of the cooking. The meal is too big for Nilo to prepare using only the kitchen facilities in his motorhome. So, it was common to see Nilo running from one motorhome to another to check on the various pots cooking there. Outside a couple of people were cracking crab to get it ready for the pot. Somehow Nilo always does a great job of pulling it all together.

With the dry weather, we were able to sit outdoors for our evening meal. As usual, all feasted on a wonderful seafood stew over rice with the exception of Wally. If I remember correctly, he was doing just fine with a steak that had been grilled just the way he liked it. Those eating the cioppino had at least a second helping and a few had thirds. Even so, Nilo had prepared a large quantity, leaving more than enough for another meal.

We had a traditional cioppino feed prepared by Chef Nilo

Charlene's camp compound was just across the road from our camp area. So, Tom took a pot of cioppino over to share with Charlene. She looked in the pot for a while with Tom describing what was inside. She then accepted the gift of Nilo's delicious seafood stew.

Another nice thing about the dry weather is that we were able to have a traditional evening of visiting around the campfire. Again, Ray built a very nice campfire for us to gather around with our lawn chairs. Nilo brought out some of his homemade brandy to share. It nearly knocked Harry's socks off.

We had a nearly full moon that shined over the pine trees and through the smoke of our campfire. I got my skewers out for Harry to demonstrate his skill at roasting marshmallows to perfection. I always enjoy ending the day next to the embers of a campfire.

On our last day on the bay, the tide was late enough that there was no need to get up real early. Again as on previous days, we returned to port at a good time. We had to get our boats out of the water because the tide, later in the day would be too low to for the boats to be retrieved.

With Tom's boat out of the water and cleaned up, we would have time to visit for awhile and take a ride in Wally's boat. When I went to the office for a few minutes, I found Charlene working on a jigsaw puzzle.

After a ride in Wally's boat we visited for a short time with Dick and Dorisdean before they had to leave for home. We invited them to stay for dinner, but they felt that they needed to get on the road. With the improved weather, the evening meal would be outdoors again. This would be the last group meal in camp on this visit to Waldport.

Another fire for us to gather around for our traditional evening chat. Everybody sat around the fire for a little longer than on previous nights. The plan was to use up the last of the supply of firewood. We were successful at finishing off the last of the firewood by the time most people had retired for the evening. The fireside chats are always a nice way to end a day.

We enjoyed another campfire chat session on our last night in camp
