Trip Summary Trip
map located at bottom of page I decided to try traveling in my new Corvette and found it to be a fun way to take a trip. My little car performed beautifully as it cruised along the back-roads of Colorado, the Southwest and Great Plains. I made no hotel reservations. I would look for a hotel at the end of the day wherever I happened to be. This worked out nicely with only one exception when I had to ask for my money back. This trip turned out to be a most unusual trip in a different kind of RV. I went to places I've never been and to a place where my married life began. I found friends from my distant past who became new friends again. I took several trips down memory lane with my new found friends. Then a highlight of many highlights on this trip, I made a new friend whom I'd never known before, who graduated from the high school where Kay and I graduated. I spent a lot of time on America's back roads. This resulted in me seeing more than I've seen before of Middle-America up close and personal. Everywhere I went I met very down-to-earth and fun people. I had a lot of fun as I drove on Historic Route 66 where I stumbled onto a fun event that occurs every year. I ended up putting more than 8,000 miles on my new car the longest distance I've ever driven on any previous road trek. I had an opportunity to visit a place in Arizona called Sedona that I've always wanted to see. It turned out to be a very beautiful and awesome place. At first I was reminded of a line of the lyrics in John Denver's "Annie's Song" which says, "You fill up my senses." It took me a while to take it all in. One of the highlights of my trip was getting to reconnect with a man Darryl Starbird who is known around the world for his custom cars and who was one of my heroes when I was a teenager. He has a great museum at Grand Lake, Oklahoma that is filled with custom cars and street rods. Darryl and his wife were very nice to give me access to a custom car that holds a special memory for me. I was united with a sister I had never known; she introduced me to her son and his family. I had a great time getting to know my "new" family. A one-hour drive from where my new family lives is the city where Kay and I began our married life together and where we lived when our son was born. When I made an unplanned return to Colorado Springs, my new friend showed me some of the tourist sites around the 'Springs one of which turned out to be another highlight that was more fun than I expected. It involved a new culinary experience for me. My friend also took me to several other places that resulted in more fun experiences. My second stay in Colorado Springs was a very special time indeed. I had to make sudden changes in my plans at times, but when I did, new adventures were presented to me. One sudden change in plans was disappointing; I had planned to meet with a woman who was Kay's best girlfriend during their senior year in high school. But the sudden change in plans gave me an opportunity to take a back-roads trip through the northern part of Oklahoma where my father was born. On this part of my trip I had my first of two run-ins with the law. I've always wanted to drive on US-50 "The Loneliest Road in America" across Nevada. When I did get out on this highway I had my second run-in with the law. I was really concerned when a Sheriff car pulled up next to me and stopped. I was waiting for traffic to pass me by so I could go back to take advantage of a photo-op that I missed. This "run-in" with the law concluded with a very unusual ending. Another sudden change in my plan took place when I found myself in Fernley, NV on what was supposed to be my last day on the road. I ended up staying with friends for the night and I had a great time seeing them again. And when I thought there could be no more surprises, I made an unexpected stop for dinner with another of the many friends I'm blessed with on what would really be my last day on the road. I'm glad that my one-month-plus trip was unstructured in such a way that I was able to make changes that resulted in more fun than I could have imagined when I planned my trip of discovery. This trip of personal discovery seems to be a turning point in my journey through grief. I've regained my desire to live again. I can thank my son and his family as well as my new freinds and my "new" sister and her family for this new feeling of wanting to survive. And again Samantha road with me. This truly was another of my RV Fun Trips.
