Monday, 3-2-98 O ur campground destination for today was so close, we didn’t have to get around very early this morning. Before breakfast, some of us went over to a corral next to the campground to look at a cute little colt. It was only four weeks old and very frisky. I took several pictures of the little one while it romped around the corral.
Tom told me a story about how the colt got its name. The colt was born during a recent storm, so the new arrival was named El Niño after the source of he storm. As we prepared to go to the restaurant for breakfast, Kay and I saw a Roadrunner bird running along the road across the street from our campsite. Tom and Nora stayed in their motorhome while the rest of our group went to Jerrys Steak House for breakfast. Dick had an order of pancakes, a stack like I’ve never seen before. The pancakes were about 3/4 of an inch thick and the same diameter as the plate. I had a yummy old-fashioned breakfast of bacon and eggs with hash-brown potatoes.
The trip today was an easy-going trek with another day of clear blue skies. Occasionally we saw a few jet vapor trails across the sky that would grow into high long-narrow clouds. On one stretch of the highway we were treated to an impromptu air show. It looked as if a foursome of stunt planes were practicing to the north of the freeway. Three of the four were leaving trails of smoke to emphasize the loops and rolls. The forth airplane was going through the motions without making a smoke trail. Dave suggested that the plane was probably too young to smoke. Our little caravan blew right through Tucson and on to New Mexico. Near Willcox, Arizona we passed a huge ostrich farm next to the highway. I’ve never seen so many long necked critters. A sign advertised ostrich eggs for sale. One three-egg omelet, made from these eggs, would feed our whole RV club. We arrived at the KOA campground in Lordsburg, New Mexico by 2:30PM and the campground was only about half full. But it didn’t take long for all the sites to be taken. The place was nearly full by 4:00PM with motorhomes on their way to the FMCA convention in Las Cruces.
After we were set up in our campsites, we planned part of tomorrows activities. We then prepared a potluck dinner and ate on picnic tables next to Tom and Noras motorhome. After dinner, some of us decided to get a jump on the propane supply by topping off our tanks tonight. We would need a full tank for our long session of dry camping coming up. Kay and I played propane scout and went ahead to see if there was a propane supply available in town. We had to break camp, but we did it because two places where we stopped earlier in our trip were out of propane. The price of propane here is $1.60 per gallon with no minimum purchase required. After getting our propane, we reported back to our group and two motorhomes went into town to fill up. After we returned to our campsites, we gathered in Tom and Noras motorhome to make more plans for our trip into Las Cruces tomorrow morning. We were told that the city of Lordsburg is shutting off the water at 10:00 tonight to repair the main water supply. So our meeting broke up early to allow us all take showers while city water was still available. [BEGIN] If you have comments or suggestions, please contact the . Copyright 1998, RVFunTrips.com.
