That's Another Story
How the Marshmallow Got Its Name
This is nothing more than a bit of trivia, however, I found it interesting. The question comes to mind, when people have been roasting marshmallows over the glowing coals of a campfire, how did the marshmallow get its name? It seems that the lowly marshmallow, as a candy-like confection, dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. This sweet food item was made from a syrup extract taken from the root of the mallow plant. The mallow plant grows in many places around the world in a marsh environment and is known as the marsh-mallow plant. Thus the source of the name of the marshmallow. Most modern-day marshmallows are no longer made from the mallow plant. Now sugar-based syrup, gelatin and air are the main ingredients of marshmallows. That's the end of another story.
